Chapter Nineteen

I Had Hope

Carter, Benjamin, and Wolfgang were in secluded conversation. I wanted to know exactly what they were planning but I knew better than to interrupt. I also knew when they came up with their plan to rescue Parker I would be the first to know.

Margret and Nellie kept me occupied while we waited. It was difficult. If it were up to me I would have jumped on a plane by now and been in England, searching for Parker. That would have been impulsive and unproductive. I would wait for my husband to guide me and keep my overactive motherly needs in check. I worried so much about my son. I felt as though I would go insane.

Marshall sat quietly on the over-stuffed couch. I sat next to him and grasped his hand in mine. We both had our own mental devils to deal with. I wanted to comfort him but I was so intent on Parker’s well-being that I nearly ignored him. I needed to refocus and clear my head. I needed to be there for Marshall. He was suffering just as I was. The only difference was I had hope; his was gone.

Just then, Carter entered the room. “Marshall, we could use your help. Would you please join us in the other room?”

I could see by the look on Carter’s face he had felt my sorrow for Marshall and came to include him in the decision making. His consideration was another reason I loved him. I looked at him with thanks in my eyes. Without talking we knew exactly how each felt. It was amazing.

“We are very close to leaving. I will be with you soon, my love,” Carter said as he escorted Marshall out of the room. Margret and Nellie were once again by my side. They never left me alone and I was thankful for their company.

A Guardian knocked on the door. Margret answered immediately. I could tell by the conversation that the visitor wasn’t one who was particularly welcome. I approached the door to find Eva, Kaitie, Emily, and a new male vampire. The Guardian was insistent that the new male wasn’t part of the vampires allowed inside. Eva argued that she just created him for Kaitie and he was not a threat to the family.

“Let them in, Margret. I am glad to see my friends. Eva can come in also,” I spoke to Margret as I pushed the door open wider for the visitors to enter.

Scott caught the scent of fresh blood and flew toward me. Eva was able to grab him by both arms with her strength and restrain him before he could reach me. I jumped back as the unfamiliar vampire lunged toward me. He totally took me off-guard.

Carter rushed into the room. “What is going on? Who is this one we do not know? Why are you opening the door to a stranger?” Carter questioned me.

Before I could speak, Scott answered Carter’s questions. “I apologize if I upset your wife. I was taken by surprise at the distinctive smell.
